Xenosaga - Free-Floating Awake Again Excerpt
Series: Xenosaga (AU)
Background: Awake Again is your standard Katimus fare; third tier background character comes back to life and gets another chance. In Cherenkov's case, chaos spends an undetermined amount of time seeing if he can push past his need for rest. He gives Andrew a time-breaking way to see Margulis safely, on his terms, because the rules don't apply to chaos. In this stopped-time space, Cherenkov visits Margulis in what Margulis thinks is a dream. Below are afterglow (or possibly even not) cuddles? Awake Again is taking a bunch of branches, the most distinct in my mind is Cherenkov's feelings about Margulis are either pure admiration for being saved, or full blown romantic (I'm abbreviating those branches as eros or agape because Yuri on Ice!!! made it easy for me). This is meant to be branch-agnostic.
Margulis folded his arms around his chest from behind. His heart ached from running around like an animal, and was beating a mile a minute. Margulis placed his hands over his heart and pressed firmly but gently. Cherenkov felt less panicked immediately, whether it was some sort of ether technique or the human contact, he couldn't tell.
"We all fall at first. Don't be too hard on yourself."
"Can you keep your hands there just a little while longer?"
"Yes, of course."
He soaked in the feel. He felt so fragile and helpless against him. He was as a rock, solid and sure, immovable and ever-present. Andrew just wanted to be held, no need for anything else. It was a childish want that he shouldn't have been asking for - a grown man, needing to be held? The demon in his brain scraped at his insides, calling him a coward and a failure and a thin-skinned baby for having feelings, but the physicality of his body against the commander's was weighty enough to shove it back. It wasn't a sex thing, it was a coping thing. Being protected from anything at any point was an illusion. Things were always on fire and no help would ever come for him, but in Margulis' strong arms in this moment, there was a tiny, temporary island of respite.
Nothing was going to stop the building from collapsing, nothing to stop the executioner's blade from chopping off his head, nothing that kept anyone from stealing anything else he ever had, including his memories, but Margulis was a fixed point in the free-fall. A beacon in the night after years of complete darkness. Even if he was otherwise terrible, compared to the darkness that had followed Cherenkov through life until that point, Margulis provided a moment of quiet.
chaos sighed and shrugged, and let Andrew have his moment. He never got to slow down to take what he needed. Cherenkov held on until he felt human again, got up, and plodded on.
Margulis awoke with tears in his eyes.

I think you'd be interested in the way that Homestuck constructs dreambubbles in the way Xenosaga uses the encephalon dives.

But yeah I need to try to attempt reading Homestuck again now that I have a tablet. Is there like a wiki excerpt on the dreambubble stuff?

Here's an explanation from the wiki: Dream bubble
What you need to know is that it's basically a dream/thought space created from the memories of a dead player, and can be influenced by the memories of a living player passing through it. It's very similar to the encephalon concepts.
