A Writey Thing
Basically just some backstory I started to write for my RP character but it got too Varissey/I don't want to be a god-moder. This is gonna change up several times so please ignore if you're not into FFXIV. XD;;;
Erm, warnings, uh, it's a brothel and there's a lot of sad emotions? Things heat up at the end but I haven't written that part yet. (Varis hits up a local house of ill repute 3 months after the death of his wife.)
It was pouring the night he came to them. They weren’t sure if the wind blew the door open or he’d slammed it. She thought it was just another blowhard Roegadyn sailor judging by his size but when he put his hood down, there was no mistaking that he was a Garlean. He was the biggest Garlean she had ever seen, and she had seen him before. They had all seen him before - Varis yae Galvus, the Emperor's grandson. It had been an unusually slow night - the rain often drove customers to them, but if Varis had planned this visit, he’d ordered it done discreetly, since the only people on the premises were staff. Three months prior, his wife had died of a mysterious illness after giving birth to their son, and he had shrunk back from the limelight his station thrust upon him. Eidinwyb Skyltlonawyn only had to look at his deeply sunken eyes to tell what he was looking for.
He shut the door gently and set his cloak on a chair before striding up to the bar counter, not making eye contact with anyone. He was not in his usual iconic uniform - just a torn woolen shirt and breeches, both initially dyed black but faded from years of washing, obviously borrowed, bought, or stolen from some local fisherman. He nodded to the madam and tried to keep his voice low, but he had the attention of everyone in the room. “I’m here to collect on an offer previously extended by the owner of this establishment.”
Lilian Brightstone barely batted an eye. “Yes, my lord, I’ve cleared everyone out for you in advance, as asked. You can take your pick - any of them, all of them, or none of them if you wish. This is as your house tonight, my lord.”
There was a wave of gasps across the room that was silenced harshly by Lilian with the snap of her finger. “You are professionals. Act like it! Line up or get out!”
Varis turned around in his chair and took a look around the room. Lily’s employees didn’t line up like soldiers at all, but most of them made a show of what they could offer, standing contraposto or with a leg up or with their arms crossed under their bustles, leaning just slightly forward. Lily took all kinds and shapes in, clothed and fed them as long as they had something else to offer and kept themselves looking good. Varis spent a good few moments looking everyone over and motioned for Eidinwyb to come closer.
Eidinwyb curtsied her best curtsy and walked forward. She knew the drill - bat some eyelashes, turn around so they could look at you, make sure the skirt flared and the hair flipped and whatever was meant to bounce in the front bounced.
Varis’ pale face showed a tinge more color all of a sudden and he nodded to Lilian. “This one, please. But pay all of them for two nights.”
Another rush of gasps erupted from the crowd, quickly silenced again with another finger-snap. “Of course, my lord. This way, please.”
Mia had been working at Lily’s for a year and a half. There had only been three other occasions in which she had shut the place down for an important guest like this. Her madam was leading them to the best suite in the house, which had been prepared just before the guest’s arrival. It was probably no better than a pigsty compared to what he had been used to all his life, but she kept her mouth shut until they were inside.
“Please send for anything you might need, my lord,” Lily said before closing the door behind her, leaving the two of them in the room alone together.
Varis nodded and turned to face her. “I know all of you know who I am.”
“Not a word of this will escape this building, my lord, that’s Madam Lilian’s rules, and we all know ‘em by ‘eart.”
He nodded solemnly and sat on the edge of the bed.
“I’m here to give you any kind o’ pleasure you wish, I know who you are and a little bit about what you been through, but I don’t know you, or what you need of me, here, tonight. If you want to talk about your feelings or just bend me over, I’m down for either.”
“I’ve agonized over how to deal with the death of my wife for three long months. She had been my intended since we were children. I was not supposed to need anything like this.” He broke eye-contact as he was explaining, and clenched his hands into fists. “This wasn’t supposed to happen this way. I’m...feeling a lot of things I shouldn’t feel, needing things attended to that I can’t bother people of proper station with. It’s driving me absolutely insane. I need the warmth of another person again and this is the only way I could think to arrange it where no one got hurt.” Tears threatened in his eyes, and he put his hand over his forehead to stop them from falling where she could see.
Mia’s instincts were to throw her arms around him, but she hesitated until he lifted his head before joining him on the edge of the bed. She sat behind him and draped herself over him, pressing her body against his back and her arms over his chest. “I’m extremely sorry. Please tell me if this is too much.”
“You’re...so warm,” he said, reaching a hand up to cover hers. His voice pitched up as it tripped over the lump in his throat. She could hear him stifle sobs and she squeezed tighter. “Apologies, I...”
“It’s all right. Everyone on this star needs to cry, no matter their station. There’s no time limit, and no instructions for how this needs to go. I will be here with you for as long as you want me to be. You’ve been through so much and you’re so young.”
He turned to face her, giving up trying to hide his tears. “It was like I...I killed her. I didn’t want to. We should have been able to save her but we couldn’t! It’s my fault! I...”
“It’s not your fault it happened. Your wife probably wanted to give everything she could to you. The only way to have prevented this is not to have been as close as you were, and grief-stricken as you are, that wouldn’t have been good either. You got to experience the kind of love most people can only dream about. It’s worth it to have had that, even if it’s gone now.”
“You sound like you speak from experience.”
“There was a boy I liked when I was a little girl, got very sick one day and just...never got better. We must’ve been ten or eleven talkin’ about gettin’ married and havin a mountain of kids. Never happened. He was such a sweet boy. No one I’ve known since has ever held a candle to him, but there’s still good in the world to do. There’s always somethin’ else that’ll make your tears today pay off tomorrow, as long as you try.”
They were face to face, and she swept a strand of platinum hair out of his eyes. “This is exactly why I came out to this place. None of my peers talk like this or have experiences like this because everything has always been prepared for them in advance. I can’t connect to any of them. Not anymore.”
“Life finds a way. Even a high legatus 'as emotional and physical needs.”
“That's the other reason why I'm here.”
Mia just smiled at him and he stared up at her eyes, as if seeing her for the first time. They were a brilliant blue-green, striking against her pale skin and white hair. He ran his fingers across her jaw and over her collarbone and leaned in to kiss her lips, which were soft and generous against his own. She responded in kind, and he kissed her slowly and gently at first, but began to deepen not long after.
She put her arms around his neck and ran her fingers through his hair before
She undid her corset from the back and pushed herself against him.
